Jain

There are slight differences in wedding rituals among the different castes in this community. Colour, folklore and songs dominate the celebrations of a typical Rajasthani Jain wedding. In earlier times the festivities carried on for several days but today, they last for a period of 5 to 7 days.

Khol Bharna

Engagement ceremony in Rajasthani Jain Wedding is called Khol Bharna. The wedding rituals begin with Modi tying, marked by the tying of a religious thread around the wrists of the family members. Then the groom’s sister performs a prayer. Pethi and Mehndi are applied on the groom’s hands for five days. The Ganesh Puja is performed to ensure the wedding takes place without a mishap. Then the Potter’s Wheel Puja is performed where two dolls are made, and a gold chain is hidden in one of them. Badibandoli, Ladoos are exchanged after the application of the pethi. Then in a ritual called Kakandora, the groom’s procession goes to the bride’s father’s house. The arrival of Barat at the marriage hall is known as Pokhna.

The actual wedding rituals begin with Maaya Bithana. Mehndi is applied to the palms of the bride and groom and their hands are joined in hastmilap.

The bride leaves for her new home the day after the wedding.
